Harry Roe, a great competitor with his excellent Paragon.
Jim Vanderzyl, Otto Heithecker, Bob Hicks
These three gentlemen flew in the 1976 CHICAGO SOAR NATS, Jim was only a jr, flying his own scratch built Challenger, he finished 6th overall out of 186 contestants.
Jim went on to become an airline pilot and he and Otto switched from rc to full scale soaring. We are glad to have all three back.
Jim is once again flying a Challenger. WC 2003 will have a special event for Challengers only.
This is what Wood Crafters is about. Tom Tock, Bob Johnson and Bob Hicks flew their own designs. A good wing planform with a good airfoil built from wood can produce an excellent flying sailplane. Although the Wood Crafters event is restricted to wood planes, fiberglass fuses are allowed and with the use of carbon, the wings can be built strong enough for the hottest winch.
